Why Doesn't My Perfume Last?
One of the most common questions we get is: "Why does my perfume fade within two hours?" The answer usually comes down to three things — concentration, application technique, and skin type. The good news: all three are fixable.
Understanding Perfume Concentrations
Fragrance concentration is the percentage of pure perfume oil in the bottle. Higher concentration = more longevity and projection.

The 5 Rules of Perfume Longevity
1. Apply to Pulse Points
Pulse points are areas where blood vessels sit close to the skin, generating warmth that continuously activates the fragrance. Key spots: inner wrists, neck (both sides), behind the ears, inner elbows, and behind the knees.
2. Never Rub Your Wrists Together
This is the most common mistake. Rubbing generates friction heat that destroys the delicate top notes and flattens the fragrance's opening. Spray and let it dry naturally.
3. Moisturise First
Dry skin has no grip for fragrance molecules. Apply an unscented body lotion or Vaseline to your pulse points before spraying. The fragrance binds to the oils and lasts significantly longer.
4. Spray on Clothing (Carefully)
Fabric holds fragrance longer than skin. Spray lightly on the inside of your collar or cuffs. Avoid silk or delicate fabrics as some fragrances can stain.
5. Store Correctly
Heat, light, and humidity degrade fragrance over time. Keep your bottles in a cool, dark drawer or cupboard — not on a bathroom shelf. In Indian summers, this matters especially.
Which Fragrances Last Longest?
Generally, oriental, woody, and oud-based fragrances last the longest because their heavy base molecules cling to skin and fabric. Fresh and citrus fragrances evaporate fastest.

How to Test a Fragrance for Longevity
- Apply one spray to your inner wrist in the morning.
- Note the opening (top notes) — how it smells in the first 15 minutes.
- Check back at 2 hours to smell the heart notes.
- At 6–8 hours, smell the dry-down (base notes). This is what stays on your skin all day.
- If the base still has presence and you enjoy it — that's your fragrance.
